Survive the Coming Energy Crisis

I happened to come across a video that one of my Facebook friends sent my way. It’s a great little primer on what’s coming down the road regarding energy and fossil fuel. You probably think, “hey, I don’t need an energy backup plan” but after watching this you might want to reconsider. As I have said before and will continue to say; the energy giants are not going go give up quietly. In fact, many of them are on the list of the top 30 corporations who paid less in taxes and more in lobbying dollars to the US Congress. While both sides of the isle are palming money and greasing [...]

Solar in Seattle – Thinking Outside the Box

Thumbnail image for Solar in Seattle – Thinking Outside the Box

More more people are thinking outside the box. I saw fabulous article about a couple in Seattle who really think outside the box when it comes to green energy. Believe it or not, they have created a zero energy house which in theory creates more energy than it uses. Check this out; With 28 solar panels covering 70 percent of the roof of the modern, two-story home, the system can produce up to 6 kilowatt hours on a clear, sunny Seattle day. Although the city certainly doesn’t have 365 days of unadulterated sunshine and the system will on average pull in less than that, the system is nonetheless capable of meeting [...]

Affordable Solar Has Arrived

Thumbnail image for Affordable Solar Has Arrived

Affordable solar has arrived! Too many people are in the dark about solar, but that’s about to change.  In a new landmark study it  has been demonstrated that the price of solar energy-generated electricity is now competitive in many areas with the price of electricity generated by conventional sources. This is great news for solar and the green energy movement and hopefully it will make its way into the mass media and public awareness.  We have hit grid parity and now solar is affordable. Co-author of the study, Joshua Pearce, Materials Science and Mechanical Engineering Professor at Queen’s University and Michigan Technical University, makes clear how much outdated information and misinformation [...]

Schwarzenegger Comes Out For Green Energy

Schwarzenegger Promotes Green Energy

The former governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, says the U.S. has lost its way when it comes to embracing green energy. The American Council on renewable energy honored the former California governor and voted him “renewable energy leader of the decade.”  It’s nice to hear something good about Arnold Schwarzenegger as he has had so much bad press in the past several months. In this short excerpt he says: “I don’t want to demonize fossil fuels,” Schwarzenegger said. “All I propose, and I’m speaking now to Congress and I’m speaking now to all the candidates running for president, is that all of our energy sources play by the same rules.” Government, [...]

Solar Pathfinder – What is it?

Solar Pathfinder

What is a solar Pathfinder and how does it work? Critical to your solar panel design and home solar system is understanding the sun’s path and how that path affects the energy you create.  There is a tool called a Solar Pathfinder, which alleviates the doubt around your installation. The Pathfinder is a non-electronic device that requires no special skills or technical know-how. It uses a polished, transparent, convex plastic dome to render a panoramic view of your site area. Every tree, building or obstacle of any kind which block the sun are visible as reflections on the surface of the dome of the Solar Pathfinder. This device works based on [...]

Why go solar? With green energy becoming more and more affordable people everywhere are wondering if they should make the switch? Not only is solar energy great for the environment but it’s great for you to. Solar Goes Green with Atlanta Landfill

Solar Energy Hits Landfill

We live in a world of waste. I remember watching a movie about a guy who eats McDonald’s hamburgers for 30 days, and in the film he mentions that every day enough trash is created to fill the Empire State building. When I heard that I was very disturbed. Back in 1960 if you lived in America, you created about 2 1/2 pounds of waste every day. That number had notched up to 3 1/4 pounds my 1970 and we’re now well on our way to creating 5 pounds of waste per day per person. Even though everyone is recycling because so much more waste is being created daily we are [...]

Affordable Green Energy

Affordable Green Energy - at Last

Etta James is known for her song “At Last” and it seems that finally, and at last, green energy is becoming affordable. According to reports from Bloomberg investments in green energy have surpassed fossil fuels for the first time in history. As of 2011 more than $187 billion had been invested versus $157 billion in natural gas, coal and oil (this again, according to Bloomberg). Even though solar energy and in particular DIY solar panels are becoming affordable for the mainstream you still don’t hear much about that.  Ask yourself when the last time was that you heard one of the major news anchors report about how solar energy has beaten [...]

Solar Panels Dumped by China into US

Thumbnail image for Solar Panels Dumped by China into US

Personally, I think competition is a good thing but NPR just ran an interview with some U.S. manufacturers discussing how China is dumping solar panels thereby driving down the price of the panel.  This is great news for the DIY solar panel enthusiast but perhaps not great news for US manufacturers.  In the interview (which you can listen to hear) one of the participants points out: The U.S. solar industry today has over 100,000 people employed. That’s more folks than are working in coal mines and more folks than are working in steel mills.Number two, our industry had a $6 billion sort of revenue last year and, of that, we exported [...]
